Drupal and WordPress Websites

What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a system that allows for publishing, editing and maintaining of content through a centralized User Interface (UI). Companies who use content management systems are afforded the ability to edit their own content without the need to pay someone else to do it. Many of these today are open-source systems that come free with community support and a huge library of videos online to help you navigate your way through the functionality.

 What options are out there?

There are a number of different Content Management Systems (CMS) out there. nDigit focuses on two in particular because of their ease-of-use and overall functionality. These two systems are Drupal and WordPress.

Drupal

Drupal is a free open-source Content Management System (CMS) that allows for easy content editing and some fairly advanced functionality. The Drupal community is made up of over 1 million people and a network of over 33,000 developers.

The system is used widely by the United States Government (such as Whitehouse.gov) and larger enterprise clientele in the entertainment industry. It’s typically chosen for it’s rich feature set and it’s stringent focus on security. While Drupal websites tend to take longer, they are far more customizable than most content management systems. This makes Drupal a likely candidate for medium to large size businesses.

Reasons to consider Drupal

  • Strong focus on Security
  • Used by the U.S. government
  • 33,000 developers working to enhance it
  • Large community support behind the system
  • Open-source and free

WordPress

WordPress is the largest and most popular Content Management System (CMS) on the market. Over 75 million websites worldwide use the WordPress platform to power their website and serve a total of over 14 billion pageviews per year. WordPress is often the favorite for small businesses because of it’s ease-of-use and overall aesthetic.

There is also far more documentation on WordPress and hundreds of thousands of videos detailing how to use the system. It’s come a long way since it’s humble beginnings as a simple blogging platform and now features automatic system updates, easy to use SEO plugins and customizable themes.

Reasons to consider WordPress

  • Largest and most popular CMS
  • Easy to use
  • Large community of developers for hire
  • Open-source and free
